The Skills in Demand (SID) Visa (Subclass 482) is an employer-sponsored temporary work visa designed to address critical labour shortages across Australia. It enables approved Australian businesses to recruit and sponsor qualified professionals from overseas when they cannot find a suitable local worker. Expert Education and Visa Services provides comprehensive corporate and individual immigration guidance to ensure a seamless sponsorship process.
The Three Active Visa Streams
The framework operates across three distinct pathways. Each stream allows you to live, work, and study in Australia for up to 4 years (or up to 5 years for Hong Kong passport holders) with unlimited travel privileges:
1. Core Skills Stream
The most common pathway is open to occupations listed on the comprehensive Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL). It covers key professions in IT, healthcare, engineering, construction, and corporate services.
Your guaranteed annual salary must meet the market rate and be at least $76,515 (indexed to $79,499 from 1 July 2026), excluding superannuation.
2. Specialist Skills Stream
A fast-tracked, high-income pathway designed for corporate specialists, technical experts, and executives across any industry (excluding trades, machinery operators, and labourers). This stream receives priority processing from the government.
Sponsoring earnings must be at least $141,210 (indexed to $146,717 from 1 July 2026), excluding superannuation.
Disclaimer: Sponsoring thresholds, income floors, and immigration costs listed here are subject to change due to government indexation, legislative amendments, and individual employment contexts. Because these figures can vary over time, please verify the exact current numbers on the official Australian Department of Home Affairs website or consult with our migration specialists before applying.
3. Labour Agreement Stream
Reserved for employers who have a customised, pre-approved Labour Agreement with the Australian Government to recruit overseas workers for roles outside the standard occupation lists.
Core Eligibility Requirements
To qualify under the Skills in Demand visa framework, applicants must meet the following baseline parameters:
You must be formally nominated by an approved Standard Business Sponsor (SBS) operating lawfully in Australia.
You must possess at least 1 year (12 months) of relevant full-time equivalent work experience in your nominated occupation or a closely related field, completed within the past 5 years.
You must demonstrate a functional command of English, typically equivalent to an IELTS overall score of 5.0 (with no individual band score below 4.5 or 5.0, depending on the specific stream) or an equivalent PTE Academic result. Exemptions apply to passport holders from the UK, USA, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand.
A formal skills assessment is required only for specific trade occupations and certain country-of-passport combinations, as dictated by migration regulations.
The primary applicant and all accompanying family members must meet federal health requirements and pass comprehensive police checks.
Subsequent Entrants (Family Units)
Immediate family members, including your spouse or de facto partner and dependent children, can be included in the primary application or join you in Australia later as subsequent entrants. Subsequent entrants are granted identical stay durations and receive full, unrestricted working and study rights within Australia.
A Faster, More Flexible Path to Permanent Residency
The Skills in Demand visa framework provides unparalleled flexibility and a direct route to settling permanently in Australia:
If your employment contract ends, you are granted up to 180 days to secure a new sponsor without breaching your visa conditions. You can accumulate up to 365 days during the entire visa period to find a new employer.
Every month of full-time sponsored employment in Australia counts toward your permanent residency timeline—even if you change sponsoring employers along the way. After completing 2 years of full-time sponsored work in your nominated occupation, you can apply for permanent residency via the Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186) Temporary Residence Transition stream.
