If you've selected a study program in Australia, you have to apply for the Student Visa Subclass 500. Here's what you need to know if you are applying for this visa.
What does the Subclass 500 visa offer?
The Subclass 500 visa (student visa) is a temporary visa designed for international students to live and study in Australia. In 2026, it offers the following:
You can enrol in a full-time course registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS).
Generally granted for up to 5 years, depending on your course length. Primary school students are typically granted up to 3 years.
You can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session. Unlimited work rights apply during official course breaks and holidays. Masters by Research and PhD students have unlimited work rights once their course has commenced.
You can include family members (partner and dependent children) in your application.
Multiple-entry travel is permitted; you can leave and return to Australia as long as your visa remains valid.
Are you eligible for the Student Visa Subclass 500?
The eligibility criteria to apply for the student visa subclass 500 can depend on age, the study program chosen, adequate health insurance, and other factors. To be eligible for the 2026 intake, you must meet stricter "Genuine Student" and financial standards.
You must be enrolled in a full-time course and provide a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE).
This has replaced the old GTE. You must answer targeted questions in your application to prove that your primary intention is study and that the course is a logical step for your career.
You must demonstrate "genuine access" to funds for your first 12 months: AUD 29,710 for a single student, plus AUD 10,394 for a partner/spouse and AUD 4,449 per child. Funds for tuition fees and return air travel (approx. AUD 2,000–3,000) are also required.
Direct Entry: Minimum IELTS 6.0 (or equivalent, e.g. PTE 50). Foundation/Pathway: Minimum IELTS 5.5. ELICOS (English Package): Minimum IELTS 5.0.
You must be at least 6 years old. Secondary school students must meet specific age-for-year levels (e.g., under 18 to start Year 10).
You must have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for your entire stay and pass a medical exam and character check.
The base visa application charge is AUD 2,500.
Applying for a longer stay
You may apply for a new student visa if you wish to continue studying in Australia.
If your visa is about to expire before graduation, you may be eligible for a Visitor visa (subclass 600). To reapply, you will need a letter from your education provider mentioning the date of your graduation.
If you still hold or once held a student visa in Australia and completed specific qualifications in the last six months, you might be eligible for a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485).
